Article 3 - Playstyles

Everyone has their own way of going about a trading card game. Some players like to play competitively, some casually, but it gets deeper than that. I’m talking about what people like to play for themes, and what specific cards they like and why. Perhaps you’ve heard the term “Aggro” or “Control” when referring to a player's deck. Today I’d like to explore with you the Playstyles available in DEMØNS & MAJIK TCG.

We will be going over the same archetypes from the last article, Article 3 - “Tribal” Archetypes. If you haven't read that article feel free to do so now

~ If you don’t wish for spoilers for the game, please don't read beyond this point~

Below are the different play styles available in DEMØNS & MAJIK TCG, alongside the archetypes that are in them.

Aggro

Aggro, short for “aggressive”, is a play style where your main focus is overwhelming your opponent in order to win. This can be done by having very strong creatures consistently (“Beatstick”), having many many decently strong creatures all at once (“Swarm”), or using other cards to reach a complex aggressive strategy (“Combo”).

DEMØNS & MAJIK TCG also have a couple of different derivatives our devs call “Unity Aggro” and “Cookie-Cutter Aggro”. “Unity Aggro” is a form of Aggro where you rely on creature count based buffs to overwhelm your opponent. “Cookie-Cutter Aggro” is a form of Aggro where you rely on individually powerful cards that don't fit a theme to overwhelm your opponent.

Beatstick - Fallen Angels ; Bears

Swarm - Butterflies

Combo - The Original Angels ; Guild of the Lake

Unity - Ants ; Spirits ; Human Spirits ; Wolves

Cookie-Cutter - Snakes ; Scorpions

Control

Control is a play style where your main focus is to control the flow of the game in order to win. This can be done by using individually powerful cards (or a combination of synergistic cards) to slow the pace of the game until you achieve your win condition (Stall / Grind), using cards to make your opponent run out of cards in

Classic - The First Merfolk ; Demons

Stall - Priests ; Jellyfish

Grind - Zombies

Tempo

Tempo is a playstyle where your focus can be divided between controlling actions your opponent can make, and overwhelming your opponent with powerful creatures. A common derivative of Tempo is “Toolbox”, where your focus can be divided between specific instances, instead of overall situations.

Classic - The Knights of Darkwood ; Demons ; Frogs

Toolbox - The Cult of Ghul ; Birds ; Golems ; Sharks

Burn

Burn is a play style where you utilize cards that deal effect damage to either overwhelm your opponent, or control the battlefield.

Burn - Stargazers

“Cookie-Cutter”

This play style is not on many people's radar due to the fact that it lived for a very short time, and in the early days of competitive Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. The name was originally given to this specific deck due to the individually powerful cards that had amazing synergy together, but would later have its meaning change negatively due to its presence in major competitive events.

Cookie-Cutter - Horrors, Tree-folk

Although there are many different play styles, the archetypes within them all function differently as well, mechanically speaking. So, for example, a Control player that enjoys playing Priests might not enjoy playing Jellyfish, as the archetypes function completely differently. But that same player may try a slight different path and play Zombies and enjoy it. We have a wide variety to choose from, but I know players will always come up with something different and incredible that will blow our expectations out of the water, and I’m super excited to see what it could be.
